Venue: Wexford Art Centre, Wexford, Ireland

Description of the Exhibition

I have produced numerous small sized portraits of my family and friends within variable ways of expression. This selection of portraits plays as one piece of work and I express myself via methods of transparency such as the dripping technique.

I also have an installation piece of text work which is displayed as five panels on a free-standing frame. The piece contains images of SMS text and multimedia messages from various communication sites. The work is used to express the urge to maintain connections with the distant world and culture left behind and the relationship between the artist and technology.

I am interested in trying to reveal how the visual image and text collaborate and communicate with each other. The text of the installation piece utilises the artist’s native Korean Haengul alphabet characters. By showing the unfamiliar symbolic format, built using different visual structures to Irish and European viewers, I aim to explore how erstwhile familiar alphabet characters are altered to ambiguous two dimensional sculptures when viewed from a western viewer’s perspective.
